1.    Understand Yourself

Before you even begin to think of changing yourself, you need to figure out who are you. What are your likes and dislikes? What is your personality geared towards?

So, how do you objectively determine what those are? I like to use a personality assessment tool personally.

My favorite one has been known to help not just me but also my husband.

Being more self-aware leads to acceptance, you being more proactive as well as shifting towards embracing your strengths rather than worrying incessantly about your weaknesses.

Because of this new sense of empowerment, you are more likely to be enthusiastic and passionate about your life…which in turn brings you to your highest sense of self.

2.Define What Change Looks Like

Is it new friends? Is it a new personality? Is it adopting a healthier lifestyle?

What does a new you look like?

Define it, list it and even DRAW IT out.

You need to get specific on what this means to you. There are no limitations to what you want your life to be.

So get to the drawing block quickly and sketch this out.

And the biggest keyword here is don’t compare to other people.

Stay quiet and listen to your intuition and gut as to what this new version of you looks, smells, and even feels like!

3.    Love On Yourself

Look it feels great to have the thought to reinvent yourself but it is important to address the underlying issue of why you feel the need to even change.

Are you practicing enough self-care at the moment?

Are you loving on YOU enough before deciding that this isn’t the standard you want to be at?

Because you do not want to change for the wrong reasons. It can have dastardly effects on your mental health.

4.    Tweak Your Daily Routine

Have you considered tweaking your daily routine? Perhaps you already have a successful life but it needs just a minor change here and there.

For example, you just need to wake up 15 minutes earlier to get in some yoga before you head off to work.

Instead of signing up for an expensive yoga lesson which will take you 20 minutes to drive to in the morning.

Other tweaks you can consider implementing:

  • – Having two eggs in the morning instead of a granola bar (this will instantly boost your mood)
  • – Write down tomorrow’s list…but today
  • – Make fruits and vegetables more accessible (if you store cut-up fruits, you are more likely to add them to your meals as toppings…instead of reaching for fatty dressings)
  • – Stand under the morning sun for just 5 minutes (come on, everyone has at least 5 minutes)
  • – Send a voice note to a dear friend (sometimes it is as simple as I miss you or I am thinking of you to boost some much-needed endorphins)

5.    Pick Up A New Hobby

This is one way of reinventing yourself that is fun! I never considered myself much of an athletic person.

But just recently I decided that I want to be known as a runner that will one day complete a whole marathon.

Even if it is just a 5k run!

So, I simply downloaded the Couch25k app on my phone and started the program.

One minute jog followed by 2 minutes of walking. Yes….I know what you are thinking… baby steps.

Below is a picture of me all sweaty from doing just that!

Look, we are born in an age where there are SO many resources. Why not utilize them to build the life you want?

6.    Set An Ambitious Goal

Most men live a life of quiet desperation – Henry David Thoreau.

As I mentioned earlier, set an ambitious goal for whatever your heart desires.

For me, it’s running a 26-mile marathon even when I can’t even run 1 minute nonstop. It seems impossible until it’s done.

I can’t wait to update this article with a picture of me completing it so be sure to watch this space.

It is okay. I have full belief that I willget there.I have also lined up 12 easy ways to achieve your goals that you can check out to assist you.

7.    Seek Support

You are not alone in trying to achieve your dreams.

Seek out support from your friends, colleagues or even external resources like therapy or life coaches.

Even online communities on Reddit can serve as a forum for encouragement for you to reinvent yourself.

Talk to them about your fears, insecurities and also the little wins you achieve daily.

These group of people can serve as your sounding board when things start to feel like it’s going awry.

8.    Celebrate Small Wins

You might think that a win is too small but here are 5 reasons why you should celebrate it.

  • Life Is Too Short

I know you are looking forward to the grand milestone of introducing your new self to the world but what if that doesn’t happen for some reason?

Shouldn’t the little moments count too?

  • Get In The Practice Of Being Thankful

There is so much research on the power of gratitude and how it affects our brain towards making more positive changes in our brain.

  • Small Wins Help You Track Your Journey

The big goal of having a completely different life might seem so out of reach.

But if you design the journey with mini check points/ milestones, you can be sure to feel like the journey doesn’t seem so far after all.

  • Boost Your Confidence

When you celebrate the wins (however small), you train your brain to practise self-belief. You become a more confident person as a whole.

Indirectly, you will be a source of inspiration for other people.

  • Improves Your Self-Reliance

You look back at your journey and you realise that the power to change and reinvent yourself was always within you.

You realise how resilient and powerful your mind and body can be when fed with the right stimuli (i.e. healthy goals)

9.    Break A Bad Habit To Install A New One

Reinventing yourself is not only about adding more positive habits to your life.

It’s also assessing your life and realising that there are things that no longer serve you.

After all, there is only so much new things you can add to your plate if you do not remove the old ones.

So, what are some bad habits you can remove today?

  • – Set a timer for social media apps to limit usage
  • – Remove subscriptions like Netflix and replace them with a free self-development course
  • – Sitting on your desk nonstop (set  the timer to ring every 1 hour at the desk for you to take a 5-minute walk)
  • – Gossip (so hard to do but important to implement)
  • – Replace every bad thought with a good thought the minute it comes to your mind

10. Listen To A Podcast On Self Development

If you are looking to change your life and can’t afford to get a life coach, well YouTube is now filled with tonnes of self-development videos.

Find a podcast host that resonates with you and ideally is where you want to be. Listen to them on your morning walk/ drive to work.

You won’t believe how it will change your life.

I ended some toxic friendships and now have clear goals and strategies on how to win in life. The best part of it all, it didn’t cost me a single dollar.

Here are some of my favorite podcasters:

11. Create A Mind Movie

What is a mind movie, you ask? Think vision board but video style.

I just heard of this from a millionaire who made her first million at 25 years old.

It is so easy to do that I set it up via Canva in minutes and now watch it EVERY SINGLE DAY.

I bet you are thinking, yeah this sounds like a bunch of hoopla but did you know that the brain instantly assigns value to everything it sees.

A study in 2019 suggested that vision boards encourage self-expression and help to identify core values.

12. Learn To Say NO, And Say It Often

Part of being a new person is to be in touch with who you are.

But if you are caught up with the ‘noise’ that is your mom, best friend or boss…you will never get to be yourself.

I will be the first to admit that I struggle with saying no.

But here are 5 ways I found to be useful in setting boundaries:

  • – Recite affirmations to set boundaries daily
  • – Learn to be selective about your outings (I only choose friends/ events that give me joy…not those energy-draining events)
  • – Learn to say no to the request but not to the person (there is no need to be rude/ impolite when saying no)
  • – Be honest about your reason (if you are honest, you never have to worry about them pushing you again)
  • – Accept that you may feel left out (when you say no, there may be missed events and also missed opportunities – you can’t have it all)

13. Update Your Sense Of Style

Reinvention of yourself isn’t just in how you feel or your physical goals. It is also about presenting a new you to the world.

Look at inspo on Pinterest for how you want to show up in the world!

14. Practise Self Compassion

As you reinvent yourself, there will be parts of your life you may not like. Things like you always being late for events or you being in love with a toxic romantic partner.

Be kind. To Yourself.

The world doesn’t say it enough but as you navigate your new journey, learn to walk in it with some grace and kindness to yourself.

Conclusion

So, there you have it…some of my tips and strategies on how to reinvent yourself.

I set these steps up in such a way that it is meant to be less overwhelming and something you can do with ease.

Life is a series of choices that are within our control so start committing more into the life you want for yourself and less of things you don’t want to do.
