How to Stay Consistent With Your Goals (My Personal Tips & Strategies)
1. Find Someone With Similar Goals As You
Whilst I enjoy listening to millionaire Alex Hormozi for his practical strategies on overcoming procrastination, I find him so far from where I currently am.
So, I would suggest finding role models who have similar goals to you and are maybe just 10 steps ahead so you can see the ‘road’.
Otherwise, you will feel like they are too out of reach and you just want to quit with every single obstacle that comes your way.
And let me assure you, there will be TONNES of obstacles.
2. Write It Down – Be As Specific As You Need
You want to lose 10kgs by Christmas. Sure, that sounds like a good goal but how do you want to feel when you are 10kgs lighter?
Describe the feeling. Not sure what I mean? Okay, let me get very specific with that goal.
General goal = Lose 10 kgs by December
Specific goal = I want to lose 1kg every month and I cannot wait to achieve my goal and wear the amazing tight clothes with improved self-esteem.
Do you see how your feelings were attached to the goal and the outcome?
Every time you read it; you can already imagine what a 10kg weight loss will look like on your body.
Overall, it will help you make different decisions about your nutrition and daily exercise.
3. Include Buffers (Because Well, Life Happens)
Yes, we all want to do hard things but sometimes things happen and you have to include buffers in your journey.
For example, I am a mom who is 18 months post-partum and would love to lose my love handles immediately.
However, my baby doesn’t sleep through the night, my husband works late and my kids get sick every few weeks.
Is it realistic then to set a goal that I want to work out daily?
IMPOSSIBLE.
I would be choosing to fail if I didn’t include buffers in my life.
So, what ends up being more realistic is for me to just exercise 1 time a week.
Sure, it might mean I have a longer journey to weight loss but it also means I don’t dread it as much and I am working on building small consistent goals.
4. Look At Yourself As A Gift To Humanity
Okay, this isn’t about me telling you to be a narcissist here.
But about thinking of yourself as someone worthy to do some good in your short time here on earth.
For example, I found myself to be quite good at emotional intelligence and romantic relationships.
So, I founded this blog to help other people around the world including YOU.
5. Remove Distractions – Get Serious
Distractions can be in the form of social media, your family, and even your friends.
I had to be honest this year about what I wanted to achieve in my career and I had to make the tough call to limit my friendships.
I couldn’t just be available for everyone anytime. I had to serve my family and myself first.
Nothing was going to stop me from achieving my goals and if my friends could not understand it, so be it.
I knew my goal was important to me and not to anyone else so I had to prioritize it.
Other Ways To Remove Distractions:
- – Work without your phone in sight (if possible)
- – No phone usage after 8 pm
- – Limit replying to non-important text until after your tasks have been completed
- – Write down your goals for the next day the night before
- – Use time blocks (e.g. work for 30 minutes nonstop and then take a 10-minute walk etc.)
- – Work in front of your vision board (to remind yourself of what the future YOU looks like)
6. Just Do It (Don’t Think & Feel)
Sounds very harsh but just do the actual work.
No thinking about how lazy you are or how tired you are or how bored you are.
Just DO IT.
Of course, your work won’t be great at first but I assure you, momentum builds and you will get faster and more efficient daily.
